Stump Grinding Questions, Answered

Straight answers from the crew that does the work. If yours is not here, call (770) 974-3964 or request an estimate online.

Stump grinding is priced by the diameter of the stump measured at ground level, with a minimum charge for a single small stump and a lower per-inch rate when we grind several on the same visit. Access matters too: a stump in an open front yard is quicker than one behind a fence or between a house and a retaining wall. We quote it on the same visit as a removal so you can decide with both numbers in front of you.

Standard grinding goes 4 to 6 inches below grade, which is enough to lay sod, plant grass or spread mulch over the spot. If you plan to replant a tree or pour a slab where the stump was, tell us and we will grind deeper or recommend full stump extraction instead.

Grinding chews the visible stump into chips and leaves the roots in the ground to decay. Removal pulls the stump and the main root ball out with an excavator, which leaves a much larger hole and disturbance but gives you clean ground for construction. For most Metro Atlanta yards, grinding is the faster, cheaper and cleaner choice.

Grinding produces a pile of chips mixed with soil. We can rake them back into the hole and level it, spread them as mulch in a bed you choose, or haul them off. Hauling is quoted separately. Fresh chips settle over a few months, so a hole that is filled with chips will need topping up with soil before seeding.

Almost never. Once the stump is gone the roots have no leaves to feed them and they decay in the soil over several years. A few species, including Bradford pear, sweetgum and some elms, can send up suckers from surviving roots for a season; those are easy to cut or treat as they appear.

Yes. Our grinders are compact enough to fit through a standard gate and we can work within a few inches of a foundation, sidewalk or fence post. We locate irrigation lines and any marked utilities before we start.

Yes, and it is common. If another crew took the tree down and left the stump, or you cut it yourself, call us for grinding on its own. Bring the diameter and a photo and we can usually quote it over the phone.

Standalone grinding jobs are usually scheduled within a few days. We answer the phone from 7am to 11pm every day at (770) 974-3964, and we serve Cobb, Fulton, Cherokee, Gwinnett and DeKalb counties from our yard in Marietta.
